The Dutch mobilization also brought a cultural aspect with it. Committees for Development and Recreation (O&O) were established to keep soldiers occupied through courses and activities. A magazine for mobilized soldiers even appeared, called De Wacht – a weekly for the mobilized armed forces. In addition, various artists performed for soldiers and wrote songs about the mobilization, Dutch neutrality, and the May days. To bring more attention to the mobilization songs, a playlist has been created on YouTube under the name “Nederlandse mobilisatie liederen (1939-1940)”, featuring 22 songs about the mobilization period. Feel free to listen to the playlist to get a sense of the mobilization culture!
