| Air Protection Service | The Air Protection Service was an organization of volunteers that tried to protect the Dutch population from the effects of aerial attacks. |
| Batch | A group of soldiers who are called up for military service. |
| Battalion | Approximately 750 men. |
| Bathing car | Cramped car in which the troops could shower. |
| C.C. | Company Commander. |
| Cantonment | Place where troops are stationed. |

| Double post | Refers to a post that is manned by two soldiers at the same time. |

| Field Post | Responsible for handeling military mail |
| Field service | Refers to the service performed in the field. In some cases, this term specifically refers to security service or outpost service. |

| Indies | Dutch East Indies (Indonesia), former colony of the Netherlands. |

| Military discipline | The internal rules of behavior within the military |

| NACO | Stands for Nederlandsche Auto Car Onderneming. NACO. This was a Dutch public transport company. |
| Nat. Theater | National Theater |
| O and O | O and O (Development and Recreation) were committees that organized courses and other activities for (conscripted) soldiers. |
| Outpost service | A security service for resting troops. Soldiers on outpost duty would warn resting troops for a potential attack and can temporarily hold back the enemy if necessary. |
